Champion jockey A Sandesh delighted his numerous followers by booting home four winners at the Pune racetrack on Sunday. The ace horseman, who had half a dozen mounts on the eight-race card, steered the first four to victory in their respective races. It wasn't all smooth sailing though, as three of the four victories were gained in thrilling photo finish verdicts, including Time And Tide, who just about managed to nose out Magileto (Vivek G up) at the wire in the feature event of the day: the Akkasaheb Maharaj Trophy.
It rained throughout the afternoon, most races being run under a mild drizzle. Sandesh switched on his winning mode in the opening race itself with a facile victory astride the 4-to-1 Moonlight Kiss, trained by Narendra Lagad. However, on his next mount in the fourth race, Spanish Bay trained by Dallas Todywalla, Sandesh had to fight every inch of the home stretch--first to collar the runaway leader Chardikala (Vivek G up), and then to hold on by the breadth of a hair from Axlrod whom jockey TS Jodha brought up with a flourish in the final 30 yards of the Amjad Khan Trophy.
Sandesh then went on to bag the next two races for trainer Nirad Karanjawalla in quick succession: Overpowering favourite El Moran (C Umesh up), who refused to concede defeat until close home and kept coming back at Seneca until Sandesh gave out his best in one final dash to wrap up a half-length verdict in the upper division of the Dinkoo N Chenoy Salver; and finally scoring a thrilling victory astride Time And Tide, the champion sprinter who was giving weight all around, and for the first time in months, looked to be in serious trouble until Sandesh managed to work his magic virtually in the last stride!
Trainer Dallas Todywalla, for whom Sandesh had ridden winner Spanish Bay, also ended the day with a double when jockey Haridas Gore stunned rivals at the odds of 20-to-1 to win the Rotary District 3131 September Handicap astride Little John.
