The Indian women chess players had a field day in Round Four of the FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup on Friday, as all four of them — Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali — advanced to the last eight via tie-breaks.

This marks the first time that four players from a single country have reached the last eight of the competition. Deshmukh and Humpy were the first to book quarter-final spots as they defeated China’s Zhu Jiner and Switzerland’s Alexandra Kosteniuk, respectively, by a similar 1.5-0.5 scoreline.

Harika then beat Russia’s Kateryna Lagno after four 10-minute Rapid games before Vaishali got the better of Kazakhstan’s Meruert Kamalidenova after two five-minute Blitz games.
