India’s Minakshi Hooda on Sunday clinched the gold medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in the women’s 48kg category. Competing against a seasoned opponent in Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay, a multiple-time World Champion and Paris Olympics bronze medallist, the 22-year-old Indian pugilist showed nerves of steel to emerge victorious.
Minakshi secured the gold after a thrilling final bout that ended in a 4-1 split decision in her favour. The encounter, staged at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, was as intense as anticipated.
Right from the opening bell, Minakshi looked confident, taking the fight to her vastly experienced opponent. She dominated the first round with her precision and footwork, landing clean punches that clearly unsettled Kyzaibay. Her aggressive approach paid off as four of the five judges scored the round in her favour, giving her an early 4-1 lead.
However, the Kazakh champion bounced back strongly in the second round. Kyzaibay adjusted her strategy, countering with swift combinations and using her experience to close the distance. This shift in momentum saw her edge the round 3-2, signalling a clear warning to Minakshi that the contest was far from over.
With the gold medal hanging in the balance, the third and final round was a display of unrelenting determination from both fighters. In a razor-thin decision, four of the five judges awarded her the decisive final round, sealing a memorable 4-1 split decision win for the Indian boxer.
