In a thrilling and dramatic encounter, Amanda Anisimova defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to secure her place in the Wimbledon final, marking the biggest achievement of her career so far. The 23-year-old American powered through a fierce contest of power-hitting, overcoming the Belarusian in a tense semi-final played under sweltering conditions on Centre Court.

Anisimova, who had been plagued by injury and mental health struggles in recent years, showed her resilience and determination to end Sabalenka’s bid for a maiden Wimbledon title. The match, lasting two hours and 36 minutes, was a true test of endurance, with both players trading heavy blows from the baseline. Despite the grueling conditions, Anisimova held her nerve to seal the victory, avenging her earlier defeat to Sabalenka in the French Open last month.

"This doesn't feel real right now, honestly. Aryna is such a tough competitor and I was absolutely dying out there. I don't know how I pulled it out," Anisimova said after the win. She will face either Polish eighth seed Iga Swiatek or Swiss world number 35 Belinda Bencic in Saturday’s final.

Anisimova’s journey to the final is especially remarkable considering her turbulent recent years. She is only the second player in the Open era to reach a Grand Slam final after failing to qualify for the previous year’s event.

The 23-year-old's breakthrough moment comes after a challenging period in her career. Once hailed as a teenage sensation after reaching the French Open semi-finals in 2019 at the age of 17, Anisimova struggled to live up to the expectations that followed her early success. After battling with depression in 2023, Anisimova took an eight-month break from tennis to focus on her mental well-being, eventually returning to form in 2024.

A victory at the Qatar Open in February and a runner-up finish at Queen’s Club in June proved that the American was back on track, and her journey culminated in this stunning semi-final performance.

While Anisimova’s victory marked a high point, it was another painful loss for Sabalenka. The 27-year-old, who had reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the third time, has yet to make it to a final at the All England Club. Sabalenka, who had suffered heartbreak earlier in the year with losses in the Australian Open and French Open finals, will rue her missed opportunity to secure a fourth consecutive Grand Slam final appearance.

The match was full of drama, with Anisimova showing composure under pressure. She saved four break points in a crucial game in the first set and capitalized on Sabalenka's errors. Despite a double-fault that handed Sabalenka the second set, Anisimova fought back with determination. She broke Sabalenka in the first game of the decider, then broke again in the fourth game after the Belarusian had taken the lead.

In a nerve-wracking finale, Anisimova had a match point on her serve but failed to convert it. However, Sabalenka faltered in the next game, and Anisimova sealed the victory, sending her into the final and making her first-ever Grand Slam final appearance a reality.
