Make Ramayana great again Titled Rediscover The Epic, this is a multi-layered production set in a contemporary framework that harks back to the times of the original Ramayana. The play that stars around 150 actors from mainstream schools around the city as well as from NGOs are all aged under 20. In times of feverish consumerism, the play seeks to drive home the old values that the epic has to offer, and make them relevant in the lives of children today. The show has been conceptualised and produced by Raell Padamsee's Ace Productions, and directed by Karla Singh. All compositions in the musical are original and have been composed by Merlyn D'Souza, and written by Krishna Thakkar. Sooth yourself with contemporary fusion The Rajeev Raja Combine is a global fusion band that has elements of jazz, Indian classical, Latin and world music. Catch a restless cityscape Catch renowned artist Brinda Miller's solo show titled A Vanishing Point. In a linear perspective drawing, the vanishing point is the spot on the horizon line to which the receding parallel lines diminish. Miller's works, which hitherto would mostly be landscapes, has of late become more architectural. Thus, in her new works one can see more vestigial lines, angles, arcs and ellipses. This abstract series, that could well resemble a restless cityscape, displays a conscious denial of a strict form, and therefore stands apart. Beauty in the details It's worth making the ferry ride to The Guild in Alibaug to check out its ongoing show, Procrustean Possibilities by Zakkir Hussain, on till February 15. His large format work looks colourful from afar, but, have a closer look, at its gorier details are seen. His depiction of collective human suffering is a thought visitors can connect with, while noticing details by the plenty in each of his works.
Fusion perfected A mash-up of Welsh folk and Indian classical notes, packaged in a jazz set might be a hard one to imagine, only until you've seen Khamira take stage, of course. The six-member band made of Welsh and Indian musicians can conjure up just the right blend of two disparate sounds to create something seamless. The hour-long set has ragas pitted against melancholic notes of Welsh folk, the drums and tabla keeping up the rhythm. The trumpet against guitar, the guitar against the sarangi, the bass against the tabla, this jugalbandi rings in your ears long after the curtain falls.

Feeling at sea (not) We were recently invited for a sneak peek of the Ark Deck and Bar, a floating restaurant that will commence operations soon. It took us 12 minutes to get to the spot from Bandra Reclamation. While it was exciting for some, others were left sea sick because of the choppy ride. Once there, we must say it was surreal to watch the splendor of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from the open air deck bar.
