In Mumbai, if you enter a room and start discussing rent, an echo of sighs emerges from each person who is a tenant in the city. That’s how common the issue of rent inflation in this city is. 

Dubai-based content creator @zaki.offplan on Instagram recently sparked this conversation online after questioning Mumbai’s soaring rental prices and comparing them to the living standards offered in Dubai, UAE. “Some apartments in Mumbai are pricier per square foot than parts of Central London,” he said in the now-viral clip. Beneath the city’s glittering real-estate headlines, lies a brutal rental ecosystem where tenants often pay exorbitant rents while possessing almost no negotiating power.
