Parallel to Hill Road, in Bandra’s old village of Ranwar, new eateries are finding a home. Along these heritage streets, you will see irony at play. As parking continues to be a nightmare here, we took the journey on foot. Here’s why you too should explore everything from Japan-inspired cafés to bakeries and sandwich shops celebrating the spirit of the village paidal.

Elvis Presley’s favourite sandwich
At: Santa Maria

A new entrant, a few steps away from Mavs, Santa Maria calls itself the neighbourhood sandwich shop. With a few tables dressed in red-and-white chequered cloth, this shop is serving focaccia and ciabatta sandwiches. Among them are eggplant melt (eggplant parm sandwich), Peggy’s piggy (pork ham and pulled pork sandwich), and falling in love Ft. Siddharth, which is their version of Elvis Presley’s all-time favourite sandwich. For sides, their gunpowder fries crispers is gaining popularity.

Boxty pancake with smoked salmon
At: Mavs Cakes and Bakes

Set foot on Waroda Road from the bright green VegNonVeg store. In Firdous Apartments, Mavs Cakes and Bakes has two-to-three tables and a limited menu that changes every season. Primarily a custom cake shop, it also serves an Irish breakfast of boxty pancakes topped with smoked salmon. On their summer menu are chicken mango and mozzarella salad, basil burrata and roasted tomato salad, and fig and goat cheese tarts.

Single-press ganna juice
At: Chapel Road stall

The sugarcane juice stalls in Bandra are legendary. Despite competition only metres away, this one on Chapel Road opened a few weeks ago. They use the single-press method to pour out fresh, chilled sugarcane juice with no added ice. They also add ginger and lemon if you like added kick to your sip.

Local chaat spread
At: Gupta Bhelpuri Centre

Ditch Elco’s hyped pani puri for another legendary bhelpuri centre. Gupta is a local-resident favourite and offers pani puri, sev puri, bhelpuri, samosa pav, and vada pav. Open through the day, you will find this shop always has a rush.

Cheese za’atar manakeesh
At: Baked In Bombay
By Bread Boulevard

Another new-kid on Waroda Road, this bakery-cum-café fits three-to-four tables. Bread Boulevard started as a delivery-only bakery and this is their first café. At this bread-forward café, you can order spinach ricotta mushroom toast, cheese za’atar manakeesh, or a classic margherita pizza. Don’t miss the sourdough chocolate cake.

Coconut malai cold brew
At: Mokai Café

Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai’s Great Wave makes a splash on this café’s façade. Inside, two levels offer ample room to dine-in but there is a wooden window for takeaway coffee orders too. Sip on the coconut malai cold brew or blueberry matcha, or another beverage from a large menu of hot and cold teas and coffees, and juices. The food menu too is largely Japan-inspired; the miso aubergine, katsu chicken sando, peanut and chilli jam noodles and scrambled eggs with miso tomato jam and edamame make for great bites.
