There is something wonderfully circular about Gary Lawyer’s current moment. Decades after his music first travelled across radio, MTV and record stores, a new generation is finding him through the Internet.
A clip about the Mumbai rocker recently crossed 2 lakh views, with a significant chunk of the audience reportedly belonging to Gen Z.
For those encountering the name for the first time, Gary Lawyer is one of the defining figures of India’s Western music scene. A singer, songwriter and guitarist from Mumbai, Lawyer began performing in the 1980s and went on to release seven albums, six of them featuring original music.
Talking to us about Nights on Fire’s new audience, he says, “I’ve always believed a good song is a good song. I don’t mean it egoistically. That doesn’t apply only to me. It applies to so many other striving artists and bands.”
That may be the simplest reason to revisit Lawyer now. Strip away the nostalgia and the story of the 1980s and ’90s Indian rock scene, and the music still holds up. Lawyer’s 1992 album The Other Side of Dawn established him as one of India’s best-known Western music artists, with Nights on Fire becoming his signature song.
For Lawyer, the international recognition remains one of his proudest achievements. Nights on Fire appeared on compilations alongside the likes of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, and Foreigner.
“That, to me, that’s my single most, the thing I’m most proud about,” he says. “Not like I go around trumpeting this whole thing. But I would like people to know about it, because it does give you a kind of standing that doesn’t come every day.”
Another song, We Were Both So Young, found itself alongside Don Williams, Kenny Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot, while Stars Become You sat in the company of artistes including Kenny Rogers, Don McLean, and Norah Jones. He was also the opening act at Bryan Adams’ concert at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in 1994.
Yet Lawyer’s story is also about what happened between the hits. He remembers a Mumbai where rock shows at Rang Bhavan could attract thousands, record companies still signed Western music artistes and musicians could travel across India playing large shows.
The Internet has changed that equation, even if only slightly. Lawyer sees the recent interest in Nights on Fire as evidence of an audience that was always there. “We do really have a huge Western music audience in India, albeit untapped,” he says.
His own musical education was similarly expansive. Growing up in a Parsi household in Mumbai, he remembers a record collection that moved from Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin to Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, and Sinatra. “I grew up with all that,” he says. “So, that’s what shaped it more than anything else.”
That history is worth remembering because Lawyer’s catalogue extends well beyond the song that has brought him back into the conversation.
There’s the atmospheric The Other Side of Dawn and Silence of the Night, the breezy Indian Summer, the romantic Stars Become You and the earlier Garden in the Rain. His jazz album High Standards, recorded with Louis Banks, offers yet another side of him.
And Lawyer is not finished. He still writes, records, plays guitar and releases music independently. “I’m kind of stunned when I hear it back,” he says of some of his albums.
For this new audience, his request is simple: listen. “I’d like them to really give my albums a good listen,” he says. “If you like the song, please share it.”

Get started (or revisit) Gary!

Nights on Fire — His signature rock anthem and the obvious starting point. The Other Side of Dawn — The title track from his best-known early album. Indian Summer — A more melodic, softer side of Lawyer. Garden in the Rain — One of his enduring romantic tracks. Stars Become You — A ballad that showcases his gentler vocal style.
