What metals, babies and the brain’s prediction machinery teach us about the morning after

The prior week, I wrote about a festival I missed, and how, eighteen months later, it walked back into an argument about something else entirely. Many of you wrote in. But one question kept coming back, and it is the one I want to take up today. What happens after?
Because, something strange often happens after a big fight. The day after the storm, the house is quieter, and somehow warmer. The tea comes without being asked for. The voice on the phone is softer. Two people who were saying unforgivable things twelve hours earlier are suddenly more careful with each other than they have been in months. As a physicist, I distrust anything that looks like a free lunch. A fight costs something. So how can a relationship come out of one stronger than it went in?
