The charm of old Bombay, the familiar characters of a beloved Bollywood classic, and the infectious energy of a new generation are coming together on stage. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), the iconic film starring Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, and the Ganguly brothers, is being reimagined as a theatrical production by Salaam Bombay Foundation, with young performers bringing their own interpretations to the story.

For director Rasika Agashe, “The idea is not to imitate Kishore Kumar or Madhubala, but to relive those memorable moments and imagine how these characters might come alive if the film were made today.” Working with performers from Gen Z has allowed the production to bring together the spirit of the original and the energy of contemporary Bombay. The result is an attempt to introduce younger audiences to a classic while allowing its young cast to make the story their own.
