From projection-mapped landmarks to gamified walks and street plays, Mumbai is finding new ways to bring its past to life. But can these experiences encourage more people to be heritage-curious?

Afghan Church drew renewed interest from Mumbaikars since the projection-mapping experience was conducted there by the Floating Canvas Company in August
Afghan Church glowed with light earlier this year. For three days in August, the nearly-180-year-old church at Colaba was bathed in celestial imagery and sound. This radiance, though, had an earthly source: Ascension, a projection-mapping experience presented by the Floating Canvas Company during the Mumbai Light Festival.
City folk signed up to watch a landmark they might otherwise have passed without a second glance. The appeal of such experiences is easy to understand. They interrupt routine, invite people to look again, and give heritage a contemporary vocabulary.
