Chatbots are very good at sounding helpful. Ask one to plan a holiday, fix a script, or organise your inbox, and it will happily describe how it might go about doing so. An AI agent is meant to take the next step: use tools, work through a sequence of actions, and bring back something more useful than another wall of advice.
That sounds simple until you try to choose one. “AI agent” now covers everything from a coding assistant in a terminal to a desktop helper that can open apps, browse the web, and remember your preferences. Some are polished enough to install and try; others feel more like ambitious kits for people who enjoy adjusting settings.
