Why misconstrue someone who may just be polite when you can ask them if they want to get to know you better?

My wedding was supposed to be in two months, but my fiancé decided to walk out because of a disagreement. We had everything sorted except for details regarding the venue and this blew out of proportion. What began as a minor issue ballooned into accusations and we almost got into a fight about financial stuff, after which he left and then messaged to say he doesn’t want to go ahead with the wedding. I have been devastated and my family doesn’t know what to do. They want me to apologise to him and treat this as a challenge because they say it’s what marriage is about. I don’t want to apologise because I think it’s a red flag and I will regret being with someone so unreliable. What should I do?
Go with what your instinct tells you because this is about your life, not your family’s. They may have every reason to be devastated and it’s obviously going to cause you a lot of pain too, but the thing to keep in mind is that you have been given real information. When someone acts a certain way, they are telling you who they are. If your fiancé could leave you two months before committing to a lifelong relationship, it’s a sign that he could just as well have done this to you two months after the ceremony. If this is meant to be treated as a challenge, it is one that shows you he isn’t equipped to handle a challenge, because walking out doesn’t solve anything.
I know a girl who smiles at me a lot and I really like her but don’t know if I am misreading the signs. How do I know if someone is just being nice or really likes me?
The best way to find out is to initiate a conversation and, at some point, ask this person out for coffee. Why misconstrue someone who may just be polite when you can ask them if they want to get to know you better?
