I am a 25-year-old woman and have been spending a lot of time with a guy who wants to be in a relationship. He has been open about his feelings and has spoken of the fact that we would be good together. The problem is, whenever I think about him, it always feels as if this is a friend rather than a boyfriend. He is kind, reliable, and someone I can talk to about anything. He isn’t someone I think of in a romantic manner. I know this is not the perfect setting for a relationship, but I am willing to give it a chance if those feelings change or evolve into something romantic over time. Is this a good idea?
Feelings towards people usually do evolve over time, but you should go into this with your eyes open given that you have some awareness of how you see him. If your expectations are unrealistic, and therefore not met after a point, it’s also possible that this may tip over into resentment that could cost you a friend. Maybe the thing to do is tell him how you feel, ask for patience, and spend more time with him until you start to see him differently. If that doesn’t happen, at least you may both be able to hold on to the friendship. If he isn’t okay with that suggestion, it is also a sign that this isn’t meant to be.
My boyfriend is a very insensitive person and doesn’t ever support me when there is a crisis. To be fair to him, he told me about this before we got together so it’s not as if I was shocked. I don’t know if should continue being with him for a long-term relationship even though he says he wants me to. What am I setting myself up for?
