My husband was recently offered a promotion, and a new posting in another office. I have been very encouraging and have asked him to take the job because it will have a huge impact on our financial condition and savings. The posting is in another country though, and he may not be able to return for around four years. We are both nervous about this because we know it will take a significant emotional toll on us. I won’t be able to go and visit him for at least two years, and he may not be able to come for a holiday too because the cost will not be worth it. Should I reconsider this or ask him to stay in the current position? I know he will agree if I insist but I don’t want to be the one standing in the way of his professional success either. I am very confused and don’t know what to do. Please help.
Knowing how long this separation will last is always great because it allows you both to plan ahead. Long-distance relationships are hard, no matter how long the separation is for, but they are not impossible to manage either. If you are both clear about why he is doing this, how this will benefit you both, and what it means for the next couple of years, you shouldn’t have a problem. Coming up with a plan that involves open lines of communication, daily chats, and an ability to stay in touch with what’s happening in each of your lives will make this much easier to handle. The bigger thing to consider is how strong your bond is, as a couple, because wanting to make any relationship work is half the battle won. If you both want this professional change, and want to make this work, nothing will really stand in the way. Weigh the pros and cons, speak about what worries you both, and walk into this with clarity about what it will require you both to do.
