When Renuka Shahane began reading the script of Aga Aai Aaho Aai, she was taken by the series' intent to challenge the stereotypes attached to a relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law. The Zee 5 series, where Shahane plays the bride's mother, explores the friendship between the three women.
The actor reflected, "I loved this concept of treating the mother-in-law and the woman differently from the mould we have seen a million times, where they are pitted against each other. The show celebrates them coming together. It's an important part of our reality that is never shown. Of course, there are cases where the other way around is true."
Shahane depended a lot on her director, Varun Narvekar, when playing a strict mother as the character is far removed from her. What kind of mother is she, we asked. "I'm open as a mother. It's a lovely friendship between my boys and me. I guide and discipline them, but I'm not as strict as my character is," she chuckled.
Women being possessive about their sons, more so after they get married, is a common occurrence in a patriarchal society. On that count, Shahane is clear about boundaries. "Parents should let go, when their children reach a certain stage. The interaction I have with my boys today is less than before. Luckily, I have my own life to lead. That said, emotionally you will always be connected."
Renuka Shahane recently directed her husband Ashutosh Rana in the short film, âTarpann'. She said, "He is such a fabulous actor that I fell in love with him again"
