The BJP has proposed setting up a dedicated ‘Northeast Species' enclosure at Byculla zoo in the vacant elephant habitat. The facility would feature animals native to the Northeast region, including the Clouded Leopard, Red Panda, Hoolock Gibbon, and Binturong.

Binturong

Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam has written to Mayor Ritu Tawde, urging her to direct the administration to present a detailed proposal for the plan.

This will be in addition to the other exotic animals also planned by BMC for the zoo. As part of its Rs 490-crore expansion project, spread across 10 acres of adjoining land, the BMC has proposed continent-themed zones featuring species native to Africa, the Americas and Australia.

Satam has also suggested that the zoo's 3D theatre be used to screen wildlife films and educational documentaries for visitors at an additional charge, helping generate extra revenue for the zoo.
