At least two people were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck Ashok Nagar, Hill No. 3, in Kurla West in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12.
A portion of soil and debris from the hillside collapsed onto two to three houses, causing casualties and property damage.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site after receiving information about the incident and reviewed the ongoing rescue operations. She also met affected families and directed officials and emergency agencies to coordinate closely and speed up the search and rescue efforts.
Tawde announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the family of each person who died in the incident. Injured people will receive medical assistance of Rs 50,000 each towards treatment expenses.
According to preliminary information, the bodies of two people have been recovered from the debris, while two injured people have been taken to hospital for treatment.
The site and the approach road are extremely narrow, with space for only one person to pass at a time, making rescue operations challenging.
Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force, Mumbai Police and 108 ambulance services are involved in the rescue operation. Officials, employees and emergency workers are continuing efforts to locate and rescue anyone who may still be trapped under the debris.
The administration is monitoring the rescue operation and the situation at the site.
Ward Committee Chairman Vijayendra Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr Avinash Dhakane, L Ward Assistant Commissioner (in-charge) Anil Jadhav and other officials were also present at the site.
Two persons were dead and six to eight others trapped after a landslide in Mumbai's Kurla area early on Wednesday following heavy rain, civic officials said.
The landslide was reported at Gaushiya Chawl (row tenement) in Chirag Nagar at 3.48 am, they said.
Search and rescue operations were underway, with teams of the fire brigade, police, NDRF, ambulance service and civic ward staff deployed at the site, the officials said.
Two persons were dead, an official said.
Two others, identified as Sohel Ansari (18), who suffered a head injury, and Mohamad Ansari, 14, who sustained a back injury, were undergoing treatment at the civic-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Both were in stable condition, the official said.
