A car was completely destroyed after it caught fire near Kharegaon Toll Naka on the Kalwa-Mumbra Road in Thane district of Maharashtra, officials said on Sunday, adding that the driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt in the incident.
They said that the vehicle caught fire at the Retibandar in Kalwa area on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), the incident took place at around 2.15 pm on on the carriageway heading from Thane towards Mumbra.
Officials said the driver of the car was travelling from Ghatkopar to Dombivli at the time of the incident.
After noticing the fire, the driver immediately stopped the vehicle on one side of the road and stepped out safely as a precautionary measure.
The RDMC said that the driver was alone in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Fire brigade personnel from the Retibandar Fire Station rushed to the spot along with one fire engine and a rescue vehicle. Traffic police personnel and staff from the disaster management department were also present during the operation.
The fire was completely extinguished by around 2.50 pm with the help of firefighters and disaster management teams.
Officials said the car was extensively damaged in the blaze and suffered major losses. However, timely action by emergency teams prevented the fire from spreading further.
The situation is now under control and traffic movement in the area has been restored.
Meanwhile, in an another incident on Saturday, three parked two-wheelers were damaged after a fire broke out near Bhaskar Tower in the Kopri area of Thane East during the early hours of May 9, officials had earlier said.
The incident was reported at around 4:19 am. Following the alert, firefighters reached the spot with a fire engine and began efforts to control the blaze.
Officials said the fire was completely extinguished by around 4:34 am. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
The fire affected three parked two-wheelers, including a TVS Jupiter, a Honda Activa and a Triumph motorcycle.
