Mumbai’s Rs 702-crore underground subway to link Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Metro-3, and Coastal Road

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pegged its underground pedestrian subway between the proposed Central Park at Mahalaxmi Racecourse with the Science Centre Metro Station in Worli and the Coastal Road promenade at Rs 702.44 crore.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) will implement the project, with the BMC planning to provide the entire funding. The proposal will be tabled before the Standing Committee on Wednesday.

A meeting regarding this was held on July 28, 2025, in the office of the then municipal commissioner, attended by senior officials from the Urban Development Department, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, and MMRCL.

Discussions focused on the planning, implementation, and funding of the subway. It was decided that the municipal corporation would provide the funds while MMRCL would undertake the actual construction. An agreement to this effect was to be signed between the Urban Development Department, the Municipal Corporation, and MMRCL.

The project is planned as a pilot initiative, and a decision has been made to complete the work expeditiously.

Connecting Mumbai Metro-3 via eight subways

During a meeting held with the MMRCL at the municipal headquarters in July 2025, discussions took place regarding connecting Mumbai Metro stations to various commercial and residential complexes via underground pedestrian walkways.

Subsequently, proposals emerged to connect complexes in the Worli, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), and Andheri MIDC areas to the Metro-3 line through subways. The plan involves constructing a total of eight underground pedestrian walkways - four in Worli, three in BKC, and one in Andheri MIDC - to link with the Metro-3 line. It is proposed that the MMRCL will execute this work.
