The Mumbai Traffic Police have announced a major night-time traffic diversion on Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Road in Bhandup to facilitate construction work for the Shangrila Metro Station under Mumbai Metro Line-4 (Wadala-Thane).

According to a notification issued by Pradeep Chavan, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), eastern suburbs, the stretch between Dr Kalpana Chawla Chowk near Bhandup Police Station and Sonapur Junction in Bhandup West will remain closed to all non-essential traffic in both directions from June 6 to September 30, or until completion of the girder construction work.

The restrictions will be in force daily between 11 pm and 6 am, subject to directions issued by the Mulund Traffic Division. Emergency vehicles will be exempt from the closure.

The traffic curbs have been imposed to facilitate the installation of U, T, and L-shaped precast girders and the movement of heavy machinery, including cranes and multi-axle trailers, required for the metro project.

Diversion routes

For traffic heading towards Mulund and Thane from Kanjur Marg and Bhandup, vehicles will be diverted via Bhandup Village Road, Balkrishna Tatojirao Shinde Chowk and Subhash Nagar Road before joining the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) towards Sonapur Junction and the Eastern Express Highway.

Light motor vehicles will have an additional diversion route through Maruti Mandir Road, Lake Road, Swatantra Sainik Natha Babaji Thorat Road and Shri Kaykai Shetty Marg.

Similarly, traffic plying towards Kanjurmarg and Bhandup from Sonapur Junction and Mulund will be diverted through Subhash Nagar Road, Balkrishna Tatojirao Shinde Chowk and Bhandup Village Road to reach Dr Kalpana Chawla Chowk. Light vehicles may also use the alternative route via Shri Kaykai Shetty Marg, Swatantra Sainik Natha Babaji Thorat Road and Lake Road.

Traffic police announce alternative routes during LBS Marg closure

The police have also announced alternative long-distance routes. Vehicles travelling from Gandhinagar Junction towards Sonapur Junction can use the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), Eastern Express Highway, Airoli Flyover, and GMLR. Traffic moving in the opposite direction can take the reverse route.

The Mumbai Traffic Police have advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance and avoid the affected stretch during the specified hours to minimise inconvenience. The restrictions are expected to remain in place until the completion of the girder-launching work for the Metro Line-4 (Green Line) corridor.
