A Reddit post by a woman living in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Mumbai has sparked concerns over privacy after she alleged that her landlord installed a CCTV camera inside the shared living room without the consent of the tenants and later asked them to "dress decently" while using the common area.

The resident, posting under the username u/OkVehicle2991, said she shares a 3BHK apartment with six other young women. In her post, she described how the landlord allegedly informed the residents one morning that a camera had already been installed inside their living room.

According to the post, the women objected to the camera being placed inside their shared living space. The landlord allegedly told them that the installation was a "police requirement" for security.

"We were told it's a requirement mentioned by the police. Security issues can easily be solved by installing a camera outside the main door. When I suggested that, he refused, saying he didn't want the trouble of getting NOCs from neighbours," the resident wrote.

The woman also alleged that the landlord told the seven tenants, who she described as mostly college students and young working professionals, to be mindful of what they wore when entering the living room.

According to her post, the common living area is regularly used for studying and eating because the individual bedrooms do not have desks.

Reddit users question CCTV installation inside Mumbai PG, urge tenants to seek legal help

The post prompted strong reactions on Reddit, with users questioning the alleged installation of a CCTV camera inside a private residential space and the landlord's reported comments about the tenants' clothing.

Several users urged the residents to approach the police or seek legal advice, while others questioned the landlord's alleged claim that the camera was required by the police.

The allegations have not been independently verified. It is also not clear from the Reddit post whether the landlord provided the residents with any documentation or communication from the police regarding the alleged CCTV requirement.

The post has nevertheless triggered a wider discussion online about privacy, surveillance and the rights of tenants living in shared accommodation.
