Mumbai on Tuesday witnessed heavy rains as Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24, predicting more showers.
Several parts of Western Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall within just one hour between 8 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday evening, with the Eksar Municipal School area recording the highest rainfall at 61 mm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Following heavy rains in the city, traffic movements were affected at the Andheri subway in western suburbs of the city for a brief period due to waterlogging.
The Mumbai traffic police advised motorists to use an alternate route.
According to the Mumbai civic body's data, high rainfall readings were recorded in the western suburbs of the city which included the following:
Anand Nagar Muni School - 53 mm
Charkop Muni School Sec-1 - 49 mm
Malwani Fire Station - 47 mm
Juhu Dispensary - 45 mm
R/N Ward - 42 mm
Versova WWTF & Lagoon - 40 mm
Kandivali Fire Station - 39 mm
R/C Ward & Kandivali Workshop - 37 mm each
Malad Depot - 30 mm
Goregaon - 24 mm
Aarey Colony, Goregaon - 22 mm
Versova Pumping Station - 21 mm
The BMC data stated that the eastern suburbs of Mumbai received light rain, with the highest reading at Veena Nagar Municipal School, Mulund - 16 mm. Other areas reported:
Bhandup Complex & Guru Govind Marg, Mulund - 13 mm
Mulund Check Naka - 12 mm
Mulund Fire Station - 11 mm
T Ward & surrounding Mulund area - 10 mm
The civic body's data further stated that the city region experienced only light rain during this period.
Meanwhile, heavy rains also lashed parts of Thane on Tuesday evening, according to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
It said that from 08:30 hrs to 20:30 hrs, no measurable rainfall was recorded. However, a sudden downpour brought 32.20 mm of rain between 20:30 hrs and 21:30 hrs, followed by a slight drizzle of 0.60 mm in the next hour.
As per RDMC-TMC, the total rainfall for the day stands at 32.80 mm.
Earlier in the day, the weather department had also issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24.
In its weather forecast, the IMD had stated that MMR is likely to experience thunderstorms, followed by lightning and moderate rainfall along with gusty winds at a speed of 40 to 50 km/hr in isolated regions.
Apart from Mumbai, the IMD on Tuesday issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Sangli and several other parts of Maharashtra, predicting 'heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning on May 20.
In its weather bulletin, the IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places were very likely on Tuesday in parts of Maharashtra.
