Mumbai on Monday yet again woke up to a very pleasant morning, with the weather contemplating the sea with clear blue skies, warm sunshine and a perfect balance of warmth in the breeze blowing across, making the city's atmosphere worth enjoying.
However, Mumbai's environmental health told a different story. Despite the inviting weather, air quality levels dipped noticeably, pushing several areas into unhealthy categories and raising fresh concerns among experts.
The Indian Meteorological Department said the city is likely to experience clear skies, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius, respectively.
At Colaba, the minimum temperature was recorded at 21.6 degrees Celsius with 62 per cent relative humidity. No rainfall was reported, while the total seasonal rainfall so far stands at 216.3 millimetres.
As per the IMD, at the Santacruz observatory, the minimum temperature was 18.9 degrees Celsius, and humidity stood at 52 per cent. The station recorded no rain, keeping Mumbai's seasonal rainfall total at 106.6 millimetres.
While the skies remained clear, the air quality told a starkly contrasting tale. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board's SAMEER app showed that Mumbai recorded an AQI of 129 at 09.05 am on Monday. The readings varied significantly across neighbourhoods. Colaba, Vasai and Powai reported relatively cleaner air, with AQI levels of 69, 84 and 131, respectively, all falling within the safer part of the spectrum. These areas remained among the few pockets where air quality conditions appeared favourable.
In many other parts of the city, pollution levels continued to rise. Sion recorded an AQI of 74, Vile Parle 115, and Kurla 102, placing them in the moderate range. Deonar reported even worse conditions, with an AQI of 250 that categorised its air quality as poor. While most parts of the city experienced slightly improved AQI, Mazgaon recorded an AQI of 197, firmly placing it in the moderate category. The situation was only marginally better in neighbouring regions, with Navi Mumbai recording a moderate AQI of 160 and Thane reporting 104.
Air quality categories range from good to severe, with values between 0 and 100 considered good, 101 to 200 moderate, 201 to 300 poor, 301 to 400 very poor and anything above 400 classified as severe.
