Maharashtra's Thane has emerged as the top-performing district during the National Lok Adalat, settling 29,392 cases and awarding Rs 63.42 crore in compensations, reported the PTI.
Officials said the district secured the number one position in the state for the fifth consecutive time.
According to District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary Ravindra S. Pajankar, a total of 12,186 pending court cases and 17,206 pre-litigation disputes were resolved during the Lok Adalat conducted on Saturday, the news agency reported.
The settlements resulted in compensation and settlements worth Rs 63.42 crore.
Pajankar said that the Lok Adalat and mediation system continue to be one of the quickest and most effective methods for resolving disputes, helping litigants save both time and legal expenses.
According to the PTI, among the matters resolved were 567 long-pending cases, some of which had remained unresolved for more than 30 years.
Officials said the disposal of these old disputes brought significant relief to litigants who had been waiting for justice for decades.
The Lok Adalat also settled 120 motor accident compensation claims, resulting in immediate financial relief of Rs 15.64 crore to affected families.
Additionally, 30 matrimonial disputes were resolved amicably during the proceedings.
The officials said that as many as 6,983 traffic challans and 1,146 cheque bounce cases were also disposed of during the Lok Adalat drive.
More than 8,700 accused involved in minor criminal cases admitted their offences and collectively paid fines amounting to Rs 81.19 lakh.
Meanwhile, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Thane has awarded total compensation of more than Rs 31 lakh to three members of a family who were severely injured in a road accident in Pune district.
In three separate orders passed on May 8, Tribunal Member KP Shrikhande directed the owner of the offending truck and insurance company to jointly and severally pay the compensation with 9 per cent interest per annum, according to the PTI.
The accident occurred on November 26, 2021 on the Pune-Solapur Service Road under Indapur police station limits. Three people of the same family were hit by a speeding truck.
The evidence clearly proves that the accident occurred due to the sole negligence of the driver of the truck, with the spot panchnama and FIR corroborating that the victims were off the main road when they were hit, the MACT order said, the news agency reported.
