Plastic sheet manufacturing unit gutted in fire at Thane (Pic/Special arrangement)
A fire broke out at a plastic sheet manufacturing unit in Thane's Upvan Industrial Area during the early hours of Sunday, damaging machinery, raw materials and the premises of the unit.
As per the officials, the fire was reported at around 6:21 am at SRK Traders, located at Pandey Industrial Estate in Upvan Industrial Area, Pokhran Road No. 1, Upvan, Thane West.
The unit occupies an area of approximately 1,200 square feet and is involved in manufacturing plastic sheets.
Following the information, Fire Brigade personnel, police officials, the Disaster Management Cell and electricity utility staff reached the spot. The response included two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles and a jumbo water tanker, along with two Disaster Management Cell pickup vehicles. Fortunately no injuries were reported during the incident.
Disaster Management Officer Y. M. Tadvi, along with officers and personnel from Vartak Nagar police station, supervised the response at the site. Mahavitaran personnel were also present.
Fire Brigade personnel and Disaster Management Cell staff managed to bring the blaze under control, and the fire was completely extinguished at around 7 am.
According to officials, all machinery and raw materials used for manufacturing plastic sheets at SRK Traders were completely destroyed in the fire. The cement roofing sheets of the premises were also damaged and shattered.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, while further details are awaited.
In a separate incident, seven people suffered from suffocation after a fire broke out at a seven-storey building in Mumbai's Bandra West on Saturday morning, officials said.
The fire was reported at M K Chamber, B Wing, on Station Road, Bandra West, at around 10:23 am.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire broke out in the ground-plus-seven-storey building.
Firefighters responded to the incident and managed to extinguish the blaze by 10:49 am.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Further details are awaited.
According to information received from the Assistant Medical Officer at Bandra Bhabha Hospital, seven people were reported to have suffered suffocation following the fire.
Those affected were identified as Gajala Javed Shaikh, 47, Javed Dildar Shaikh, 48, Tahera Ismail Shaikh, 28, Mohimuddin Javed Shaikh, 8, Ismail Akhinuddin Shaikh, 38, Mariha Javed Shaikh, 12 and Mehnoor Javed Shaikh, 20.
All seven were reported to be stable and were receiving treatment on an outpatient basis, officials said.
