CJP calls off September 5 march after Centre assures withdrawal of FIRs against student protesters

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Monday withdrew its proposed protest march on September 5 after taking note of steps initiated by the Centre towards withdrawing FIRs registered against students who participated in the protest.

CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das appeared before the Supreme Court (SC) and informed the court that the organisation was calling off the planned march in view of the measures taken by the Centre to withdraw the cases against the protesting students.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the SC that the Centre remains committed to all three assurances given to CJP leaders following the students' protest.

The development comes after the Centre initiated steps towards addressing the concerns raised by the protesters, including the withdrawal of FIRs against students.

Appearing before the SC, Das said the organisation had taken note of the developments and decided to withdraw its September 5 protest in light of the measures being undertaken by the Centre, ANI reported.

Government moves SC to quash 13 Delhi FIRs against protesters

Earlier today, the government approached the SC seeking the quashing of FIRs registered in Delhi in connection with the NEET paper leak protests and assured that protesters would not be targeted or harassed in the future, the CJP said on Monday.

Das said the organisation was monitoring the developments and urged BJP-NDA governments in other states to take similar steps.

"The government has filed [an application for] quashing of all FIRs with regard to Delhi and has ensured there will be no targeting or harassment in future as well. We are monitoring the situation," Das said in a post on X.

The SC agreed to hear the Delhi Police application on Tuesday.

The application seeks to quash 13 FIRs registered in connection with the NEET paper leak protests. It also seeks permission to register a fresh FIR against 2,873 people who were present at the protest site to investigate their alleged involvement in the violence.

Das said he, advocate Prashant Bhushan and other CJP members would appear before the Supreme Court when the matter comes up for an urgent hearing. He also called on other BJP-NDA governments to file similar applications, reported PTI.

"Hope the other BJP/NDA states will file the same application by tonight," Das said.

Meanwhile, Das said the CJP was awaiting progress on compensation for families of students who died following the NEET controversy.

"Positive development is expected on the compensation for families of the dead NEET victims too," he said, reported PTI.

Das said the CJP would continue supporting students and young people facing action over the agitation.

He also said a government delegation had travelled to Puducherry over the past three days to meet him and provide updates on the steps being taken.
