The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Delhi Red Fort blast and termed it as a 'terror attack', reported the PTI.
As a mark of respect to those who died in the explosion on Monday evening, the Cabinet observed a two-minute silence during its meeting.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Union Cabinet reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to its policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all forms and manifestations, according to the PTI.
The powerful blast near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station killed at least 12 people and injured several others.
The government on Wednesday officially termed the car explosion outside Delhi's Red Fort as a terrorist incident and directed investigative agencies to handle the case with the "utmost urgency and professionalism" to ensure that the perpetrators and their sponsors are brought to justice without delay, as per the PTI.
The resolution stated that the situation is being closely monitored at the highest levels of government.
Soon after returning from his two-day visit to Bhutan, Prime Minister Modi visited Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital to meet the injured and later chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security.
The Cabinet's discussions took place two days after an explosives-laden car detonated near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, killing 12 people and injuring several others. On the same day, eight people - including three doctors - were arrested following the busting of an inter-state "white-collar" terror module.
Describing the attack as a "senseless act of violence", the Cabinet condemned the "dastardly and cowardly act" and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. It also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and praised the efforts of medical personnel and emergency responders for their prompt action.
Vaishnaw said that the Cabinet also acknowledged the messages of solidarity and support received from several governments worldwide.
The Cabinet further appreciated the timely and coordinated response of the authorities, security agencies, and citizens, commending their dedication and sense of duty in the face of crisis.
Reiterating its commitment to national security, the Cabinet said the government remains steadfast in its resolve to protect the lives and well-being of all Indians.
