Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Thursday said that nobody's voice will be suppressed in the House, but unparliamentary conduct by any member will not be tolerated either.

He described the Lower House of the state legislature as a "premiere" legislative body in the country.

Narvekar was in Nagpur to oversee the new facilities being put in place at the Vidhan Bhavan, where the winter session of the state legislature is planned to be held from December 19. It was his first visit to Nagpur after assuming the role of the Assembly speaker.

Interacting with reporters at the 'Meet the Press' at the Press Club of Nagpur, he said the duration of the winter session will be decided in the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC).

When asked about his views on the behaviour of legislators during the assembly session, he said, "In my maiden speech as a speaker, I had said that nobody's voice will be suppressed, but at the same time no kind of unparliamentary conduct will be tolerated."

Hence, legislators will have the opportunity to express themselves as per the rules and the parliamentary democracy. However, no unparliamentary conduct will be tolerated as it affects the House and people of the state, he said.

Narvekar noted that in the last assembly session, around 9.5 hours of business was transacted everyday and it is expected to continue in the upcoming session.

"I feel the Vidhan Sabha is a premiere legislative body and our members/legislators conduct themselves very responsibly. Hence, I am confident that in the coming times the legislators will work in the session keeping their responsibilities in mind," he said.
