S Jaishankar to chair BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting this week (File pic)
India is set to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting on May 14 and 15 under its chairmanship of the influential grouping for 2026. The high-level meeting will be chaired by India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar.
As per the official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on May 12, India will see participation from BRICS Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation from both member and partner countries.
As part of the visit, the visiting dignitaries will also call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the significance of India's leadership role in shaping the future agenda of the multilateral bloc.
The two-day meeting is expected to focus on key global and regional developments of mutual interest, with foreign ministers of BRICS member nations exchanging views on pressing geopolitical and economic issues.
The Ministry of External Affairs, while issuing an official statement, also noted, "During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers of BRICS Member Countries will exchange views on global and regional issues of mutual interest. On the second day, BRICS Member and partner countries will participate in a session themed "BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability". This will be followed by a session on the "Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System".
This will be followed by another crucial session on "Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System," where participating nations are expected to deliberate on strengthening international institutions and advocating for a more inclusive and representative global order.
The upcoming meeting builds on the momentum of the last BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. That meeting was also chaired by India in its capacity as the incoming BRICS Chair for 2026.
India's hosting of the ministerial meeting is being seen as a major diplomatic milestone, reflecting New Delhi's growing influence within BRICS and its commitment to advancing cooperation among emerging economies amid evolving global challenges.
