A woman has accused a man of sexually harassing her while she was waiting for a cab in Bengaluru's Ramamurthy Nagar, prompting the city police to launch an investigation after she shared a video of the alleged incident on social media.
According to the woman, the incident took place when a man riding a scooter stopped near her and allegedly asked, "What's your rate?" She claimed the remark, along with his other comments, left her feeling intimidated and concerned for her safety.
Describing the incident online, the woman said no one should have to face such behaviour while waiting in a public place.
"As a woman, I should be able to wait for my cab without being treated like an object or being propositioned for money. His words were intimidating, disrespectful, and made me fear for my safety," she wrote.
The woman said she began recording the interaction on her mobile phone. Upon noticing that he was being filmed, the man allegedly hurled abuses at her before fleeing the spot on his scooter.
She also shared the registration number of the vehicle, KA03 KQ6190, and appealed to Bengaluru Police to identify the accused and initiate legal action against him.
Calling for greater accountability, the woman urged people not to remain silent about harassment in public spaces.
"Silence only emboldens offenders. Public spaces must be safe and respectful for everyone," she said in her post.
Responding to the complaint, Bengaluru Police said they have started verifying the video and the vehicle registration details shared by the woman. Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the accused and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case comes weeks after another incident in Karnataka in which the Davangere Women Police registered an FIR against a gym owner accused of blackmailing and repeatedly sexually assaulting a 30-year-old woman by allegedly recording private videos without her consent and threatening to circulate them online. Police are investigating that case as well.
