Nevada hit by 5.7 magnitude quake near Carson city

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Silver Springs, east of Carson City in Nevada, on Monday evening. The quake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 5 km, caused strong shaking in nearby areas lasting about a minute. Residents reported light to moderate damage, though no major casualties have been confirmed

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Nevada east of the state's capital of Carson City on Monday.

The temblor hit just before 6.30 pm local time, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

It was centred near the town of Silver Springs at a depth of 5 km. The shaking continued for about a minute.

The USGS said some residents in nearby communities reported strong to very strong shaking and light to moderate damage.
