<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/stock-market/article/sensex-loses-over-300-points-nifty-slips-95-points-amid-geopolitical-uncertainties-23647633" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">The stock market</a> will remain open for regular trading on Friday, September 4 despite the observance of Janmashtami.
As per the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the festival is not included in the holiday calendar.
Investors can buy and sell shares during the regular trading window as the festival will no disrupt the trading or the settlement process. The festival will also not disrupt trading across equity derivatives.
Besides, the commodity market will also be open for trading as the festival is not part of the holiday calendar for Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). Investors would be able to participate in both the morning and the evening sessions without any disruptions.
On Thursday, the domestic equity benchmark indices extended their losses for the fourth straight day during the week. Paring their earlier gains, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/stock-market/article/sensex-nifty-extend-losses-for-4th-day-sensex-declines-over-415-points-amid-elevated-crude-oil-prices-23648186" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 417.49 points</a>, or 0.55 per cent, to close at 76,152.86, while the 50-share NSE Nifty dipped 41 points, or 0.17 per cent, to settle at 23,873.45.&nbsp;
The stock market has been on a downward trajectory since the renewed tensions between USA and Iran which has fuelled concerns of a possible supply disruption of crude oil and has led to a sharp spike in their prices.&nbsp;
According to analysts, Indian equities are likely to remain under pressure amid elevated crude prices, keeping investor sentiment cautious. On Thursday, Brent crude rose 1.6 per cent to around USD 97.13 per barrel, near its highest levels in over a month.
<h2>Bank holiday in several states</h2>
However, banks across several states in the country will remain closed on account of Janmashtami, as the festival is part of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/are-banks-open-on-janmashtami-and-ganesh-chaturthi-heres-a-list-of-bank-holidays-in-september-23647763" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar for September</a>.
According to the RBI website, banks will remain closed on account of Janmashtami (Vaishnva) (Shravan Vad-8)/Krishna Jayanthi. The states where the branches would be closed are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
<h2>What is Janmashtami?&nbsp;</h2>
Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, marks the birth, or appearance, of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. It is observed on the eighth day, or Ashtami tithi, of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. The festival is particularly significant in the Vaishnava tradition and is celebrated with prayers, devotional singing, fasting, temple rituals and midnight festivities.

The festival will not disrupt the trading activity in equity, equity derivatives and commodities.
