<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/satya-nadella-if-the-ai-we-build-is-not-helping-humanity-and-under-human-control-its-not-worth-pursuing-23649923" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Tech giant Microsoft</a> on Monday said it has introduced a voluntary exit programme for eligible employees in India, the US, the UK and Canada, which would cover around 60,000 employees, in an attempt to restructure its workforce in an evolving landscape, according to news agencies.
The company will offer financial support and career planning resources to those who seek to transition outside the firm.&nbsp;
Microsoft has 23,000 employees in India, though it is not known how many are eligible for this scheme. Eligible employees in India must decide on the offer until December 1, and they will receive emails detailing the terms of their voluntary exit offers.
<h2>Employees in which grade are eligible?</h2>
"This offer will be available to eligible employees in participating teams in Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States at level 70 and below (internal job grades that span various levels of seniority at Microsoft)," Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said in her blog post.
&ldquo;This is a time-limited, voluntary program that gives those who are eligible the opportunity to leave Microsoft with financial support and career planning resources,&rdquo; she said.
The offer is expected to be similar to a standard severance package, including one month's base salary for every completed year of service, along with health insurance and career transition services, according to PTI.
"This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support. It also gives participating organisations another way to adapt their workforce to changing needs," Coleman said.
<h2>Programme will not be implemented uniformly across operations</h2>
Microsoft clarified that the programme would not be implemented uniformly across its operations and participation will depend on individual business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements.
Microsoft announced plans in July <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/microsoft-to-lay-off-thousands-of-employees-today-report-23266055" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">to lay off </a>about 4,800 employees, mainly in its Xbox and commercial sales teams, according to IANS.&nbsp; The company had earlier this year rolled out the scheme to a smaller group of US employees.
"The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us. We'll learn from it," Coleman said.
Coleman said the company would seek to balance changing business requirements with opportunities for employees to grow and contribute. She added that Microsoft would support employees to develop new skills and explore internal career opportunities, where appropriate.
"There is no one-size-fits-all approach for every team or every employee," she said.
<h2>Investment in AI</h2>
Meanwhile, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company remains committed to strengthening India&rsquo;s talent and technology ecosystem, supporting the country&rsquo;s AI ambitions with USD 20.5 billion in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-meets-pm-modi-announces-usd-175-billion-investment-in-indias-ai-infrastructure-23607005" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">planned investments</a> from 2025 to 2029 across cloud and AI infrastructure, skill development, and operations.
"We are also on track to fulfil our commitment of equipping 20 million people across India with AI skills by 2030," the Microsoft spokesperson said.
