Alpha movie review: Alia Bhatt and Sharvari deliver the punch, but the spy thriller lacks muscle

Mumbaikars braved the monsoons for YRF’s Alpha, a spy thriller starring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor. While the action and acting deliver, a formulaic plot and cringey dialogues keep it from matching the highs of Dhurandhar

After a series of postponements to avoid a box office clash, Alpha has finally hit the big screens. Mumbaikars had to brave the monsoons to make it to the cinema halls to watch this latest instalment in the YRF Spy Universe. But was all the trouble worth it? If you don’t plan to read the entire review, Alpha, directed by Shiv Rawail, is basically Dhurandhar (1 and 2) in reverse, and that’s a major spoiler right there, so we might as well leave it at that.

The plot is simple: it takes us back to Anil Kapoor’s past, way before he became the Chief of R&AW in War 2. He plays Colonel Vikrant Kaul, who takes part in the mission to create Alpha serum, which can turn ordinary soldiers into superhumans. Bobby Deol, who essays the role of Fateh Singh Lakhawat, leads it and considers Anil his Guruji. In a bid to save his wife Dia Mirza, who is pregnant with Alia Bhatt, Anil steals a vial and injects her with it. She dies while giving birth, while Bobby steals Alia. He names her Sita and raises her to be a killing machine. Now, a grown-up Alia has learned the truth and wants to exact revenge. She learns about her twin, Durga, played by Sharvari, and the not-so-emotional family reunion sets the tone for this film.
