Anurag Kashyap, Aaliyah Kashyap
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared a candid and humorous glimpse into his personal life on mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist while speaking about family, ageing, and life lessons. During a conversation, the director was asked how he would feel about becoming a grandfather if his daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, decides to have children in the future. In response, Anurag revealed that he already considers himself a grandfather in a rather adorable way.
Plans on becoming a grandfather
Explaining the situation, the filmmaker said that his daughter treats her pets like her children, which technically makes him a grandparent. “She has three kids. There is one Cosmo, and there are these two little cats, and she considers herself a mother, so I am already a grandfather,” he said with a smile.
Despite the light-hearted comment, Anurag also spoke about how younger people often look up to him, which sometimes makes him feel older. “But the thing is, it's not like I mean, I think I have that inside me. The young people who come, they look at me like that, it only happens automatically,” he added.
Reflecting on the idea of ageing, Anurag shared an interesting perspective about how people start feeling older when their children grow up quickly. “You don't grow old because you grow old in age. You grow old because you had your child early, who grew old too fast,” he said.
He further explained how these milestones serve as reference points, making people more aware of the passage of time. “You see a reference point each time,” Anurag noted.
The filmmaker also recalled the first time someone from the younger generation addressed him as "Uncle", a moment that made him realise how perceptions change over time. “I think the first person to call me 'uncle' was Sara Ali Khan,” he revealed.
Anurag Kashyap talks about the advice he would give his younger self
During the conversation, Anurag also reflected on the lessons he would share with his younger self, particularly about career decisions and finances. Speaking honestly, he said, “I would have told my younger self not to produce. Empower people, but never start any company. What you're not good at.”
However, he also clarified that he does not regret the choices he made in life. Instead, he sees them as valuable experiences that helped him grow. “Not that I regret anything because I only bought books and movies, and whenever I had an extra, I would support a short film and everything,” he said.
He admitted that saving money might have made certain moments easier. “I would have saved 10 per cent. I wouldn't have had to act for my daughter's wedding if I had saved that amount,” he joked.
Still, Anurag concluded with a sense of acceptance and gratitude. “But I've lived my life like this, and there are no regrets. There's been a lot of learning. Maybe I would not have been the same person, but yes, there's been a lot of learning.”
