Be it Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati or Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's S Durga, films and filmmakers are increasingly being targeted. While many may be a mute witness to the curtailing of creative freedom by the powers that be, Anurag Kashyap, who has often struggled to release his films, cannot look the other way.

"There's an atmosphere of fear," says Kashyap, adding that the sense of panic isn't restricted to filmmakers alone. "There is fear among the common people too. As a part of the media, tell me, are you not afraid? People just want to lie and say nothing has happened, but everyone knows the truth."
However, he asserts that the current climate doesn't deter him from making films that push the envelope creatively. "I have to make my choice. Do I choose to be afraid or fearless? I will make my choice and I will stand up for it. But I will not resent or look down upon someone who is afraid because I understand where his fear is coming from. Nor will I question anyone who doesn't fight for me. I will fight my battle alone, if need be."
Point out to him how Bhansali is fighting a lone battle to ensure his film sees the light of day and Kashyap cuts in, "I am there for him, but I don't want to worsen his situation by saying anything [that might have an adverse effect]. But if truth be told, there is always a silent support system in this industry. I have never felt alone here."
