Marathi film Gondhal has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2027, putting the spotlight on its journey towards a possible Best International Feature Film shortlist. However, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap believes India’s repeated Oscar disappointment stems largely from the films it chooses to send.

Speaking to Variety India, Kashyap was asked why India has failed to win an Oscar despite producing films with international acclaim. His response was blunt, “Because we select absolutely wrong films.” He cited The Lunchbox and All We Imagine As Light as films that could have been stronger choices, claiming that the Film Federation of India “messed it up” and that the two films were “deliberately” not selected.
