Those heading to theatres to watch Dilli Dark might be in for a surprise. Dibya Das Roy’s directorial venture opens with an unusual disclaimer, at the behest of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). With the satire examining racism and class divide in Delhi, the CBFC directed the makers to insert a separate disclaimer clarifying that the film neither represents the capital’s ethos nor aims to defame its citizens.

According to sources close to the certification process, the board raised concerns that the depiction of Delhi could be misconstrued as an attack on the city’s character and its people. An insider said, “While understanding the satirical tone, the board felt that the narrative might be interpreted by some as a generalisation of Delhi and its residents. The disclaimer was suggested to prevent a backlash.” The disclaimer states that the film is a work of fiction, and that it does not claim to represent the entire ethos of Delhi, nor does it intend to defame the city’s people.

Dilli Dark, which won acclaim in the film festival circuit, follows the journey of a Nigerian-origin MBA student navigating life in Delhi as he confronts both overt and subtle racism. A senior member of the film’s production team, on condition of anonymity, said, “If this disclaimer helps prevent misinterpretation, we’re okay with it. But considering the film is A-rated, we don’t see the need for the disclaimer.” A few expletives have apparently been muted in the satire.
