‘Mogambo khush hua’

Ace costume designer Madhav Agasti has revealed that he was paid Rs 35,000 for creating Amrish Puri’s iconic Mogambo costume in Mr India (1987), which he designed in just seven days. “It took me seven days to make the costume. I bought the latest embroidery machine then and made it for Rs 25,000 in my Bandra store,” writes Agasti in his memoir Stitching Stardom: For Icons, On and Offscreen. Producer Boney Kapoor was so impressed that he “increased the remuneration by R10,000.” Recalling Puri’s reaction, Agasti adds, “His first sentence at RK Studios in Chembur when he saw the costume was ‘Mogambo khush hua!’” Agasti, 76, has designed costumes for over 350 films and many Indian political leaders.
