Days before the release of Dhurandhar, Ranveer Singh has found himself in legal trouble after his mimicry of Daiva from Kantara: Chapter 1 drew criticism from the audience. Many on the internet slammed Singh’s remark and act, calling it “insensitive” and “disrespectful.” Now, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has lodged an official complaint against the actor. According to a PTI report, the organisation stated that Ranveer had "insulted Goddess Chamundadevi by describing the deity in a derogatory manner."

Complaint filed against Ranveer Singh

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) on Monday submitted a complaint to the police against actor Ranveer Singh, alleging he insulted Goddess Chamundadevi during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. According to the complaint, Singh imitated the divine form of a deity portrayed in the Kannada film Kantara: Chapter 1 and referred to Chamundi Daiva, revered by the Kotitulu community, as a "female ghost."

HJS representatives Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye submitted a memorandum to Panaji police station sub-inspector Sahin Shetye, seeking the registration of an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. "Chamundi Daiva is considered a sacred family deity of the Tulu community, and depicting or describing the deity in a derogatory manner amounts to disrespect. Such acts may cause public resentment and disturb peace," the HJS said.

While seeking a thorough investigation, the outfit also urged IFFI organisers to frame a code of conduct to ensure that no religious deity is depicted insultingly at future events. "Ranveer Singh should issue a public apology and assure that he will refrain from making such remarks or performances in the future," the HJS added, while appealing to its supporters to register their protest in a peaceful and lawful manner. Singh was not available for comment.

About the incident

While praising Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara: Chapter 1, Ranveer referred to Chamundi Daiva as a “female ghost” and then went on to imitate the character on stage. As per recent videos, Rishab Shetty even warned him not to do so. Singh did not heed the warning and continued with his act, eventually leading to massive online backlash.

Apart from this, his upcoming film Dhurandhar has also landed in trouble after the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra (posthumous) and Sena Medal awardee, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. They alleged that the movie draws unauthorised inspiration from their son’s life without their permission.
