She’s still got it — the commanding presence, the magic, and the moves. We saw it for ourselves in January when a video of Kalpana Iyer grooving to her yesteryear hit, Ramba Ho, at a wedding went viral. Soon everyone had the same question: why don’t we see her on screen anymore? When mid-day contacted the actor, who moved to Dubai in 1999, she said she is keen to return to acting.
“I am open to work, be it movies in Hindi or any other language, television, OTT, stage shows, advertising, and reality shows. My only request is that the role should be age-appropriate. I will accept it, and do it without hesitation and with complete sincerity. The length of the role is irrelevant; quality and substance are important,” said the actor, 69, over a call.
While Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar (2025) made Gen Z wake up to late Bappi Lahiri’s chartbuster Ramba Ho, the viral wedding video in the following weeks put the spotlight on Iyer, who had fronted the 1981 song. The actor had no idea that an impromptu dance would make her such a hit with the youth.
Now she wants to make the most of this momentum and face the camera again. Why didn’t she consider returning to acting earlier? “Better now when I have an entire generation who stands with me, thanks to that viral video. I’ve loved quite a few roles done recently by a few actresses in Bollywood. All I will say is I’m not a young girl or even a woman in her 30s. I will turn 70 in July. So, the role can be anything, but certainly not frivolous.”
