Despite being the daughter of renowned filmmaker and actress Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma never felt like an insider in the industry. She has starred in over 50 movies and still feels that many of her films have not been commercial. In a candid conversation on mid-day’s podcast series Sit with Hitlist, she opened up about Wake Up Sid, feeling like an outsider, and working on her dialect in Omkara.
Konkona Sen on Wake Up Sid
When asked about how different the Bombay film world is compared to Delhi, the actress shared, “I was actually very removed from the film industry world, I think. I've actually not really ever felt like an insider in anything. That's almost been a part of my identity that I'm a little bit on the periphery of things and a bit of an outsider. I really enjoy that perspective. I don't really see myself as a mainstream star.”
Konkona added, “I have done around 55 to 60 films. A few of them are what would be considered more mainstream, and many of them are not. Even when I have done mainstream films, it’s usually the not-so-mainstream film of that particular studio, like Wake Up Sid. I think it’s perhaps one of Dharma’s less mainstream films.”
When asked about Ranbir, the actress remarked, “Ranbir was just starting off then. He was so new and young.”
Working on Omkara with Vishal Bhardwaj
Talking about her experience of working with acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, the Metro In Dino actress recalled struggling with the UP accent. She said, “I don't remember much except being stressed about that UP dialect. You know, I'm a Bengali person. My Hindi is just about okay, and I spent a lot of time retouching my lines. Then I had to speak in the Western UP dialect.”
She concluded, “I had to get it right, and I was still kind of new, surrounded by very established actors. The whole thing was nerve-wracking. I remember one day, Vishal, who is very gentle and very sweet, came and quietly said in my ear, ‘You know, Koko, just concentrate on the acting. Don’t worry so much about the accent.’ I thought, ‘Oh no, now I’m not even able to act!’”
