The trailer for Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor's next Hindi film 'Param Sundari' has created uproar among Malayali viewers, with numerous content creators reporting that critical posts on Instagram have been erased.

Here's how the Influencers reacted

Pavithra Menon, a singer and RJ, was among the first to criticize the film's portrayal of Malayali women. In a now-deleted video, she asked why a Malayali actress was not hired in the starring role, saying, "Women in Kerala do not walk around wearing jasmine flowers and dancing Mohiniyattam."

Her video was quickly removed, with Instagram citing Maddock Films' copyright claim. Menon shared a screenshot of the announcement, saying, "Happy Independence Day to everyone who has a voice."

However, this did not dissuade her, and she re-uploaded the video, expressing her anger at seeing a Hindi actor represent a Malayali character. "What's the problem with employing a proper Malayali actor? Are we less talented? This does not happen in Kerala. We don't wear jasmine flowers around or do Mohiniyattam in offices and homes," Menon said, adding that if filmmakers struggle with pronunciation, "simply use Trivandrum instead of Thiruvananthapuram - we'll be satisfied."

Vedangi also added her reaction

Menon's critique has resonated with many Malayali filmmakers, who have accused the film of cultural misappropriation. Vedangi, the content creator, also claimed that her video was taken after she posted complaints about the teaser.

"The team behind this movie is currently suppressing all Malayali creators. Several creators have complained about this. Instead of conducting a thorough study, they chose to capitalise on Kerala's culture. "The portrayal is extremely out of touch and disrespectful," Vedangi stated in a new video.

She also maintained that their criticism fits under fair use, citing Section 52 of the Copyright Act. "We are free to express our criticism. However, every Mallu creator who mocked the trailer has received copyright infringement notices. This is silence, pure and simple. You may have cast or dubbed a Malayali actress. I think silencing us was worthwhile."

The debate is spreading online, with many Malayali users criticizing Bollywood for stereotyping and distorting their culture.

This isn't the first controversy with the film; the makers have been mired in yet another one for shooting a romantic scene in the church. This had upset the Christian community, and they had demanded to take down the scene from the song.
