Amid rumours of a second lockdown, when big-ticket releases are shying away from a theatrical run, Mohit Chadda’s Flight comes out strongly in support of the exhibitors. The year began with the theatrical releases of Roohi, Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina, albeit at a 50 per cent capacity. However, the increasing number of COVID positive cases is giving distributors and filmmakers cold feet. Despite the uncertainty, the Suraj Joshi directorial film stands steadfast on opening at 70mm screens today.

Originally slated to release on March 19, Flight was initially pushed to April 2 owing to a delay in programming and fear of another lockdown. “It was a conscious business decision, one that benefits all the stakeholders — exhibitors, distributors and producers,” says Chadda, adding that they were hoping to have a clear window for the film. “This is a time when producers and films need to work together [and aim at] collaboration instead of competition [at the box office]. Hopefully, Holi has elevated the audience’s mood and will encourage them to come to the cinemas.”

Undeterred by the rising numbers, Chadda puts his faith in the government that has allowed theatres to operate at 50 per cent capacity, and cinemas for maintaining the hygiene standards. “There is always anxiety, but we are hoping for the best. We are sure the government and the cinemas are doing everything in their power to ensure everyone’s safety,” says the actor, who is also serving as a producer for the film.

With the film releasing in about 600 screens in the country, Chadda says, “We spaced out the film [to tap into] the holiday weekend, while hoping for a wider release despite the lack of big stars.”
