Little-known British actor Andrew Garfield has beat big names to notch the much-wanted role. Slotted to release in 2012, the film will have a new director as well. Here's some interesting trivia on Spider-Man's casting: &gt;&gt;u00a0Andrew is believed to have seen off contenders including British actors Jamie Bell, who shot to fame in Billy Elliot and Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson, won a Bafta in 2008 for his childkiller role in teleseries Boy A. &gt;&gt;u00a0Andrew succeeds actor Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero. Tobey shot to superstardom in 2002 with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. He reprised his role in the sequels Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). &gt;&gt;u00a0But before Tobey bagged the role, The studio had expressed interest in actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Freddie Prinze, Jr, Chris Klein, Wes Bentley, and Heath Ledger. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2010/jul/spiderman2.jpg" border="5" /> &gt;&gt;u00a0Although Sony Pictures acquired the 'Cameron material' from MGM/UA, in April 1999, the studio announced they were not hiring James Cameron himself to direct the film. Sam Raimi was attached to direct in January 2000, for a summer 2001 release. He had been a big fan of the comic book during his youth, and his passion for Spider-Man earned him the job.
