Ramanand Sagar made the 1987 Doordarshan show Ramayan, and Shiv believes that Lord Ram's role demands an actor without a strong recall value from previous films.

In a recent interview, Shiv said that he cannot accept Ranbir as Lord Ram since the actor has previously starred in films like Animal. “Except for that one casting, I like the rest of the casting very much. Personally, I cannot accept Ranbir Kapoor as Ram because after Animal, I cannot accept him as Ram. When I look at Ram ji, I feel that a fresh face should have been taken," he said, as reported by ANI.
