Following the massive success of Dhurandhar, filmmakers may be rethinking how big-budget spectacles are released. Shah Rukh Khan’s King and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War could potentially be split into two parts
Shah Rukh Khan in King
Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar turned out to be a massive success at the box office, one that no one saw coming. The Ranveer Singh-starrer has entered the Rs 1,000 crore club and is still going strong, making it the highest-grossing Indian film so far. The story of Dhurandhar is yet to reach a conclusion, with its sequel set to release in theatres on March 19, 2026. Now, it appears that the industry is taking cues from Dhurandhar’s success.
King and Love and War to follow Dhurandhar's path
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the makers of King and Love & War are reconsidering their release strategies. King marks Shah Rukh Khan’s big-screen spectacle with his daughter Suhana Khan and is being directed by Siddharth Anand. Love & War is a period drama directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starring Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, and Ranbir Kapoor. Quoting a source, the portal stated, “Both King and Love & War are big-budget spectacles and have gone beyond what was on paper in terms of production cost. As Dhurandhar has set a trend, both SRK and Bhansali are individually contemplating splitting their epics into two parts and releasing them within a gap of less than six months.”
While the first part of Love & War is aiming for an August 2026 release, the second part may arrive in January 2027. King, on the other hand, is contemplating a September 2026 release followed by March 2027.
“This will happen only if the two stalwarts have enough footage to split their films into two parts. Right now, they are both shooting their films, and these are just preliminary discussions while analysing the success of Dhurandhar. A final call on whether the films will release as a single part or two will be taken at the editing table,” the source further told the entertainment portal.
About Dhurandhar
Meanwhile, Dhurandhar continues its dominant run at the box office. The film revolves around the life of an Indian spy who infiltrated the criminal and organised crime networks in Pakistan. It offers a fictionalised account of how the collusion of the Pakistan underworld and ISI leads to terrorist attacks in India. Dhurandhar marks a new era in the Indian spy-thriller genre.
Ranveer Singh's film released on December 5, 2025 and has been creating records ever since. It hit another century in its fourth week, entering the Rs 1,000 crore club worldwide in just about three weeks. It has become one of the few Indian films to hit that milestone on a global stage.
