Sound check: A snap review of new music

Lizzo and Cardi B

Lizzo’s new single
Worth your time: No

Given the amount of criticism she has been subjected to following her Grammy Award win in 2020, Lizzo doesn’t surprise with Rumors, her latest offering with Cardi B. An apparent clap-back at the disgraceful comments she has received, this one seems to mock, perhaps even playfully indulge in rumours that spread like wildfire.

But, surely there’s a difference between hitting back at trolls — which she often aptly, and unabashedly does — and creating music, as a professional artiste. Even though Rumors strikes a fine balance between being peppy and bold, it appears to be a lazy response to a very pressing issue — the way women are treated.

On top of my playlist: Namit Das

Namit Das

. Tere mere sapne (Guide): I love how this one was canned in four shots. It’s the epitome of romance; well-written and performed. It is also aptly placed in the film.

. If (Bread):  My mother had bought a collection of English songs. This song was at the end of side A, and each time my mom would play the cassette, I’d wait for it. It is beautiful.

. Main zindagi ka saath: It’s my go-to song. Sahir Ludhianvi is among my favourite poets. I like its philosophical tone. It has become the anthem of my life. Each couplet is one I live by.

. Michelle (The Beatles):  I love the album Rubber Soul, which released in the band’s early years. Each song has a story. This particular one from it shines due to its texture.

. La vie en rose (Edith Piaf):  The film by the same name was based on Piaf’s life. It affected me immediately. Recently, several Hollywood artistes — including Lady Gaga for A Star is Born — have revisited this song.
