After Chandni Bar, Tabu will once again play a sex worker on screen in Sonagachi. However, this time, she is a feisty prostitute with a heart of gold who doesn't blame her fate for her situation. And when she learns about a paedophile targeting a young nine-year-old girl, she steps in to help out. The film will be shot on location in Sonagachi, one of the biggest red-light areas in the country.

According to Sudipto Chattopadhyay, who is directing the film, Sonagachi is set during the Durga Puja and draws a parallel between the festivities and the situation of the protagonists. Naturally, Tabu turns into Goddess Durga on the ninth day and faces off with the Mahishasur, the paedophile played by Sabyasachi Chakravarty. Sonagachi also stars Rupa Ganguly and Indrani Haldar.
